An Unusual Encounter with Surprising Discoveries
In my practice, I encountered an intriguing case involving an Indonesian domestic helper who had just arrived in Singapore. She presented with worms in her upper digestive tract, a rare occurrence in developed countries like Singapore. Using ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography), an advanced endoscopic technique, I had to unblock her bile duct, which was also full of worms. My attention was first drawn to this case when reviewing the patient’s MRI scan. The report indicated an elongated stone in her bile duct. However, her blood test results suggested worm infestation, a rare condition in this region. This contrast between the MRI findings and blood tests piqued my interest. The next day, during the ERCP, I discovered her stomach and bile duct were indeed filled with worms.
