The prevalence of obesity has more than doubled globally in the past 40 years, affecting over a billion people currently. Recognized as a disease with significant impacts on quality of life and life expectancy, obesity accounts for two-thirds of excess mortality related to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Despite its strong link to various cardiovascular conditions—such as atherosclerosis, heart failure, thromboembolic events, arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death—obesity is often underrecognized and inadequately addressed compared with other cardiovascular risk factors. This recently published ESC consensus statement reviews the epidemiology and aetiology of obesity, its effects on cardiovascular risk and heart conditions, and management strategies. It emphasizes the importance of both population-based and personalized approaches for preventing and managing obesity.
