Importance of the Pre-Analytical Phase
Laboratory testing underpins a majority of clinical decisions, yet the accuracy of results depends heavily on processes that occur before samples even reach the laboratory. The pre-analytical phase encompasses test requesting, patient preparation, sample collection, handling, storage, and transport. Unlike the analytical phase—where quality standards and strict laboratory protocols minimise error—the pre-analytical phase remains vulnerable, with nearly half to two-thirds of laboratory errors arising at this stage. Reducing mistakes in this early phase is therefore essential to avoid unnecessary repeat testing and ensure that results can be interpreted with confidence.
