My affinity with dermatology stems from a personal place – my own struggles with atopic eczema since childhood. I recall the countless visits to the doctor’s office, all the different sticky creams and greasy ointments, as well as the need to avoid exercise because sweat worsened the condition.
Growing up with atopic eczema, I’ve experienced firsthand the struggles of dealing with skin disorders. This personal journey has given me a genuine understanding of the impact these conditions have on individuals and their families, allowing me to connect with my patients on a deeper level and empathize with their experiences. This kickstarted my journey into dermatology, driven by a personal commitment to alleviate suffering and restoring confidence of those afflicted.
Solving a Puzzle
The most interesting aspect of dermatology is that it is visual-centric clinical medicine, akin to puzzle-solving. Each patient brings a unique set of nuances and challenges, like clues to a complex puzzle. Every consultation is like playing detective, and I enjoy the process of piecing clues together to uncover the underlying cause of a skin condition. Whether it’s deciphering the signs of a chronic disorder or detecting early signs of cancer, each diagnosis of an interesting case feels like a small victory that is extremely satisfying.
Navigating Current Challenges
A common challenge in dermatology is bridging the gap between patient expectations and clinical reality. We are in an era where patient dissatisfaction finds a voice on social media. Patients may expect extensive testing or immediate solutions, yet many dermatological conditions are diagnosed clinically. This perhaps stems from a consumer mindset that is becoming increasingly prevalent in healthcare, with patients believing that a battery of tests is always necessary. Sometimes, patients would even request for specific treatments, which may not be necessary or even suitable.
Addressing this challenge requires communication and empathy towards our patients. It is about listening, educating, and building rapport to ensure they feel understood and supported in their care journey. From addressing fears and anxieties to managing unrealistic expectations, the art of dermatology extends far beyond what is in textbooks.
Keys to Success
To me, success in my practice revolves around quality patient care. I believe in consistency, striving for good patient outcomes, and addressing expectations. It is important to do the basic and mundane right. Humility and a genuine passion for helping patients are also cornerstones of success.

To those still considering, here’s a tip; this is an exciting field with a close-knit community and many inspiring mentors. Don’t be afraid to seek them out if you are interested in pursuing dermatology as your specialty!
Dermatology in the Future
As technology continues to reshape the landscape of medicine, dermatology is no exception. Artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining traction, particularly in the realm of skin cancer detection. Aside from AI, the future of dermatology lies in personalized and precision medicine, but its widespread adoption is largely dependent on its practicality for both individual patients as well as the presiding healthcare system. There needs to be a careful balance between patient needs and broader healthcare policy and funding considerations.
Dispelling Misconceptions
Lastly, there might be a misconception that dermatology deals with surface-level concerns. While the skin may be our specialty, our expertise is not merely skin deep. We’re trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, from immune-mediated disorders to skin cancer, as well as surgical techniques and fundamental understanding of clinical pathology.
The journey into dermatology is a rewarding and fulfilling one, filled with challenges, discoveries, and moments of connection. Aspiring dermatologists, approach this field with passion and humility, and you’ll find that the rewards far outweigh the challenges.
