Sleep Disorders in IBS Patients

  • Sleep disorders are prevalent in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), with a pooled prevalence of 37.6%. Patients with IBS tend to sleep more hours per day but feel less rested compared to healthy controls.
  • Despite the high prevalence of sleep disturbances, only a small percentage of patients attribute their sleep issues to gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms.
  • Previous studies have indicated associations between GI symptoms and sleep quality in IBS patients, with waking episodes during sleep correlating with greater abdominal pain and lower quality of life.
