Genetic counselling and confirmatory invasive testing are advised if NIPT shows a high-probability result. Australian guidelines recommend offering prenatal screening for fetal aneuploidy (e.g., Down syndrome) to all pregnant individuals. NIPT is one of three available prenatal screening tests; it uses a maternal blood test after 10 weeks of gestation. NIPT has the highest sensitivity and specificity among screening tests but is not covered by Medicare in Australia. A 12- or 13-week ultrasound is recommended alongside NIPT to detect major structural anomalies.
