Global Superbug Crisis: Nearly 40 Million Lives at Risk by 2050, Study Warns

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is projected to cause nearly 40 million deaths worldwide by 2050, representing a 70% increase from current levels, according to a study published in The Lancet.

AMR occurs when pathogens such as bacteria and fungi evolve to resist the effects of medications designed to treat infections. This resistance has been fueled by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in humans, animals, and agriculture. The World Health Organization has labeled AMR as one of the most significant global public health challenges, warning of its potential to overwhelm healthcare systems and reverse decades of medical progress.
