The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) is issuing a public alert regarding three weight loss products available online. These products, named “Nature Slim,” “Slimming Seven Days by Figure Up,” and “Energy Booster Figure-Up New Look Strong Version,” are being marketed with claims of being “natural” or “herbal.” However, HSA’s analysis has uncovered significant levels of sibutramine, a banned substance known for its toxic nature and potential to cause serious adverse effects when consumed.
The aforementioned products were found to be sold on the Shopee e-commerce platform. In response, HSA has collaborated with the platform’s administrator to promptly remove the affected product listings. Furthermore, warnings have been issued to the sellers involved in the distribution of these products.
Two consumers experienced dry mouth, extreme thirst and other adverse effects after taking products
In the aftermath of using these products, two consumers reported experiencing adverse effects. One user who consumed “Nature Slim” for a two-month period encountered symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, dry mouth, and extreme thirst. Initially, these symptoms were considered normal due to the product’s claim of enhancing metabolism. However, suspicion arose when the consumer learned from HSA’s previous press releases that these effects could be attributed to the presence of sibutramine, leading to a report to HSA.
A separate consumer using “Slimming Seven Days by Figure Up” encountered issues such as dry mouth, extreme thirst, and insomnia after only a few days of product consumption. This emphasizes the consistent adverse reactions associated with the use of these weight loss products.
High Levels of Sibutramine Detected
HSA’s comprehensive analysis revealed elevated levels of sibutramine in both “Slimming Seven Days by Figure Up” and “Energy Booster Figure-Up New Look Strong Version.” Sibutramine, previously banned in Singapore since 2010, poses significant health risks, including an increased likelihood of heart attack and stroke. Additionally, there have been reports of serious health consequences, such as heart problems and central nervous system disorders, associated with its consumption.
False Claims and Misleading Labels
The weight loss products in question were deceptively labeled to contain herbal ingredients like green tea, cactus, and raspberry extracts. Furthermore, “Slimming Seven Days by Figure Up” was falsely labeled as “100% natural,” and “Nature Slim” was indicated to contain a “botanical extract.” Adding to the deceptive marketing, these products featured counterfeit “GMP” logos, misleading consumers into believing they met high-quality standards certified by Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
Consumer Advisory:
- Stop using these products and consult a doctor if feeling unwell or concerned about health.
- Be wary of products claiming to be “100% herbal,” “100% natural,” or guaranteeing rapid weight loss; they may contain harmful ingredients.
- Recognize that quick and effortless weight loss methods don’t exist; focus on a balanced diet and appropriate exercise for weight control.
- Consult a doctor or dietitian for assistance in managing weight.
- Refrain from buying products from unknown or unverifiable sources, especially online or from overseas.
- Be aware that adulterated products may lack quality control and pose serious health risks.
- Only purchase from reputable pharmacies or retailers’ websites with an established presence in Singapore.
Seller and Supplier Advisory:
All sellers and suppliers must stop selling these products immediately. HSA will not hesitate to take stern enforcement actions against anyone who sells and supplies products found to be adulterated with banned and prohibited substances or potent ingredients. Sellers and suppliers are liable to prosecution and if convicted, may be imprisoned for up to 2 years and/or fined up to $10,000.
Members of the public who have any information on the sale and supply of these illegal products may contact HSAโs Enforcement Branch at Tel: 6866-3485 during office hours (Monday to Friday) or email: hsa_is@hsa.gov.sg.
