Resurgence of Tuberculosis: Global and U.S. Health Implications

WHO Warns of Tuberculosis Surge Following USAID Funding Cuts

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning about a potential global surge in tuberculosis (TB) cases and deaths due to significant cuts to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) funding. Until recently, USAID provided up to $250 million annually for TB programs in 24 countries, playing a critical role in drug supply chains, laboratory services, surveillance, and research trials.

Since the USAID rollback in January 2024, TB programs have faced severe disruptions, particularly in 18 high-burden countries, leading to estimated 3,600 additional TB deaths and 6,400 new infections within a few weeks. The WHOโ€™s goal of reducing TB cases by 80% and deaths by 90% by 2030 is now in jeopardy.
