
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued an advisory concerning the rising cases of dengue fever globally, urging vigilance among healthcare providers, public health authorities and the public in the United States. So far in 2024, countries across the Americas have reported a staggering 9.7 million cases of dengue fever, doubling the figures from the entire year of 2023 (4.6 million). In March 2024, Puerto Rico declared a public health emergency following the World Health Organizationโs declaration in December 2023.
Closer to home, Malaysia recently reported a notable increase in dengue cases, reaching 2,788 cases during the 26th Epidemiological Week (ME26) from June 23 to June 29, compared to 2,438 cases the previous week, with 5 fatalities attributed to dengue-related complications. Comparatively, the cumulative cases reported up to ME26 stand at 75,263 cases, marking a significant increase from the same period in 2023, of which 59,057 cases were reported.
