Thailand Reports First Suspected Case of New Mpox Strain

On 21 August 2024, Thailand reported a suspected case of a new, more dangerous strain of mpox, which has been declared a global public health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO). This development is significant for healthcare professionals as there is a surge in mpox cases globally.

Details of the Suspected Mpox Case

The patient, a European traveler, arrived in Thailand on August 14 from an unspecified African country where mpox is spreading. According to Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, head of Thailand’s Department of Disease Control, laboratory tests are currently being conducted to confirm the strain. Initial findings suggest the case may involve the Clade 1 variant of mpox, as opposed to the less contagious Clade 2 strain.

While the patient has been isolated in a hospital, preliminary tests confirm the presence of mpox, but further lab results are needed to definitively identify the strain. The results are expected in a few days..

Current Mpox Situation and Risks

Mpox, a disease caused by a virus transmitted from infected animals and spread through close human contact, is characterized by fever, muscle aches, and large, boil-like skin lesions. Recent outbreaks in Africa, including countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda, have seen a surge in cases and deaths since July.

The new Clade 1b variant of mpox, which has been identified in recent outbreaks, is notably more deadly and transmissible. It has a mortality rate of approximately 3.6%, with children being particularly at risk. The Clade 1b variant has driven the recent increase in cases and has been linked to higher fatality rates compared to other strains.

Global and Regional Implications

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, was first discovered in 1958 in Denmark. The current surge in Clade 1b cases underscores the need for heightened awareness and vigilance. Notably, Sweden reported its first confirmed Clade 1 case outside Africa on August 15, further indicating the potential for global spread.

Healthcare Professionals Role

Healthcare professionals should stay informed about the latest developments regarding mpox, particularly the new Clade 1 strain. Vigilance in monitoring and reporting potential cases is crucial, given the increased risk and transmissibility associated with Clade 1b. Continued research and public health measures will be essential in managing and mitigating the impact of this emerging strain.

For more information on mpox and updates on the situation, healthcare professionals are encouraged to consult the WHO and relevant health authorities.
